Despite Lucasfilm continuing to regularly shelve confirmed projects, the latest piece of information to come out of the rumor mill suggests that a new Star Wars trilogy could be on the horizon. According to recent speculation, the upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu, which is the first theatrical outing under the Star Wars banner after 2019’s Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, could serve as the first entry in a brand new three-film series.
The Mandalorian & Grogu could get a Star Wars movie trilogy
Renowned scooper Daniel Richtman recently noted that Lucasfilm is seemingly looking to kick off a new Star Wars trilogy with 2026’s The Mandalorian & Grogu.
“Lucasfilm reportedly plans to make ‘THE MANDALORIAN & GROGU’ the first installment in a potential trilogy,” the entertainment insider stated in his latest Patreon update. However, he also remarked that Disney’s decision to move ahead with the said Star Wars trilogy would depend highly on the box-office performance of the forthcoming Pedro Pascal-led film. “It depends on how well the film does,” Richtman said.
The Mandalorian & Grogu flick, which was originally envisioned as a fourth installment in The Mandalorian series, comes out on the big screens on May 22, 2026. While Disney initially planned to draw curtains on the arc of Pascal’s Din Djarin with the said movie, current rumors indicate that the Mandalorian may have a larger part to play in setting up the new era of Star Wars films.
Additionally, Richtman recently noted that Lucasfilm has decided to put the much-awaited Rey Star Wars movie “on hold once again.” If true, this opens up space for Disney to plan for other Star Wars projects, which, according to Richtman, could be a new trilogy, starting with The Mandalorian & Grogu. Despite all the positive updates surrounding the said trilogy, Lucasfilm has yet to share any official word on the same.
