Javicia Leslie Has Not Been Fitted for the Batwoman Suit Yet

Fans waiting to see Javicia Leslie don the cape and cowl of Batwoman may have to wait even longer than they expected. Like, even after the season begins. At the DC FanDome panel for Batwoman, the actress revealed that she has not even been fitted for a costume yet. Though she notes she does pass along her suggestions, and when she finally gets fitted, it won’t look like a Kate Kane copycat. She will be “unmistakably a sister,” so don’t expect any Watchmen-style Hooded Justice whiteface.

Before her character of Ryan Wilder fully becomes Batwoman, the season will focus on what became of Kate Kane. Different conspiracy theories will emerge, and revelations will be “shocking and awesome.” Then we’ll see the gradual rise of Ryan, whom Leslie describes as, “goofy-meets-badass-meets a person who doesn’t like to be told what to do,” like her. The Kane family will not welcome her immediately, but by the end she’ll unite them…in some form.

When she first got the call to be Batwoman, Leslie revealed she had just finished praying. Part of what got her the part almost immediately? An athletic reel she submitted along with her audition. FanDome showed some very brief clips, including her lifting a large tire, running, jumping, and kickboxing. Leslie has been practicing that last one, along with Muay Thai, for two years. Previously, she worked for the army paying stop-loss soldiers, and described her military mom as “Superwoman.” She cited Eartha Kitt, Kerry Washington, and Reese Witherspoon as major role models.
