Taika Waititi to Make Two Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Shows for Netflix

Get ready, because you are going to see a lot more Oompa-Loompas on Netflix soon. In a press release (via Variety), the online streaming service announced that Taika Waititi is making a couple of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory animated series. One of the shows will follow the young Charlie Bucket in his visit to the Wonka chocolate factory, while the other will focus exclusively on the world of the Oompa-Loompas. The Thor: Ragnarok director will get complete control of the creative process of both projects based on the 1964 children’s novel by Roald Dahl.

“In the words of Willy Wonka himself – we are ‘Delighted! Charmed! Overjoyed!’ with Taika’s appointment on this project,” commercial and entertainment director for the Roald Dahl Story Company Gideon Simeloff added. “There is something undeniably Wonka-esque about Taika’s creative flair and inimitable sense of humor and we cannot think of anyone more perfectly suited to leading the creative charge on these first of their kind, feature quality Netflix shows.”

The upcoming animated projects come from the extensive partnership with The Roald Dahl Story Company that Netflix announced last year. It will also bring Dahl stories such as Matilda and many others to Netflix’s users.

“The shows will retain the quintessential spirit and tone of the original story while building out the world and characters far beyond the pages of the Dahl book for the very first time,” Netflix announced. Could we finally see the sequel, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, adapted?

Waititi proved with his recent Jojo Rabbit that he can be a master of the satirical black comedy. An adventure like the one of Charlie in Willy Wonka’s factory should be Waititi’s natural territory. And given that he also loves to act in his movies, he might get even more deeply involved in Netflix’s series.
