Kevin Feige Sheds Some Light on the What If? Animated Series

Almost all of Marvel’s recently announced Disney+ series fall within their Phase 4 narrative. However, What If? is an outlier among those shows. Marvel Studio’s first animated series is based upon the classic comic that explored alternate outcomes and different paths for its heroes. Among other stories, What If? brought Spider-Man into the Fantastic Five and introduced Jane Foster as Thor years before the main continuity adopted both ideas. But according to Kevin Feige, the animated series will have a more specific focus.

While speaking to ScreenRant, Feige said “right now, we’re focusing on for the first season, everything you know about the 23 movies in The Infinity Saga and adding one twist to them and seeing how everything turns out different.”

“We’re doing things like ‘What if Peggy Carter became the super-soldier, and not Steve Rogers?'” added Feige.

As revealed during Marvel’s Hall H Comic-Con panel, several stars have already signed on to lend their voices to the series. Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Neal McDonough, Dominic Cooper, Toby Jones, and Stanley Tucci will all likely be back for the Peggy Carter episode. Josh Brolin, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, and Sean Gunn will probably be in Guardians of the Galaxy themed episode. Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, and Tom Hiddleston are also coming back for a Thor story. Meanwhile, Chadwick Boseman and Michael B. Jordan’s involvement suggests a Black Panther episode as well. Jeffrey Wright will provide the voice of Uatu, the Watcher, and narrate the series.

What If? will premiere on Disney+ in summer 2021.
