Avengers Directors Explain Why Doctor Doom Isn’t ‘Just an Adversary’ in Secret Wars

The Russo Brothers recently opened up about how they look at Doctor Doom ahead of his debut in the upcoming Avengers movies. The director duo’s comments suggest that the iconic villain will be more than a straightforward threat when he arrives in the MCU.

As spotted by Comic Book Movie, the Russo Brothers shared their thoughts in a foreword for Marvel Premier Collection’s new edition of Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic’s 2015 Secret Wars. While discussing the comic, the duo also explained how they view Doctor Doom and what makes him fascinating.

“And then there is Doom. Doom is not just an adversary. He is ambition and fear woven together,” the Russos wrote. “In Secret Wars, he tries to hold reality in place through sheer will. He believes he can save everything if he controls enough of it.”

The directors also highlighted the character’s emotional, human nature hidden behind his mask. “Hickman reveals the strain behind that effort and the human fragility beneath the armor. Even someone who can reshape existence cannot escape the emotions that define him.”

What should fans be expecting from Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars?

The Russo Brothers are returning to the MCU to direct Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, after helming previous Avengers titles.

Doomsday will introduce heroes from multiple universes converging in a single universe to face the existential threat of Doctor Doom. Set 14 months after Thunderbolts*, the film brings together X-Men from a separate universe, Avengers, Wakandas, and New Avengers from Earth-616, and the Fantastic Four from Earth-828.

Secret Wars adapts the 2015 comic, which follows a reality shaped by Doctor Doom, who takes control after the multiverse faces destruction. The Russos’ comments on Doom imply that the movie will also focus on his emotional conflicts and the backdrop that led to his villainous nature.

The duo also noted that “scale only matters when it is anchored in sincerity.” The Russos described Secret Wars as a story about “identity, hope, and the cost of wanting to save something larger than yourself.” That said, the movie might lean more into the themes of identity rather than focusing largely on multiverse conflicts.

While Marvel has not shared Doom’s backstory in either Avengers film, the directors appear interested in his ambition, fear, and emotional conflict.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to release on December 18, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027.
