Ghost Rider fans are in for some disappointment when it comes to the latest MCU update.
Rumors have circulated for years, now, that Ghost Rider could soon be coming to the MCU. One of the most common names that comes up when fans discuss who they hope gets cast in the role is Ryan Gosling, though some have also expressed their desire to see Nicolas Cage reprise his role as Johnny Blaze. Cage starred in 2007’s Ghost Rider and the 2012 sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.
There have also been rumors circulating online that Ghost Rider could finally make his MCU debut in either Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars, the former of which is being released later this year and the latter of which arrives in 2027.
What is the update on Ghost Rider’s MCU debut?
According to scooper Daniel Richtman, however, people shouldn’t get their hopes up too much, as Richtman says that, while Marvel was looking for a Ghost Rider actor at one point in time, the character won’t be appearing in Avengers: Doomsday.
It’s not immediately clear if this means that Marvel is still actively looking for an actor to play Ghost Rider, if they put the matter on pause for now, or if they’ve already selected someone and just haven’t announced it at this time. Richtman’s report doesn’t make mention of anything regarding Avengers: Secret Wars, meaning it’s technically possible the character could be showing up in that movie, though whether or not that actually happens remains to be seen.
In addition to Cage, Ghost Rider — who was created by Roy Thomas, Gary Friedrich, and Mike Ploog, with the character first debuting in 1972’s Marvel Spotlight #5 — was notably played by Gabriel Luna in the fourth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday is dated for December 18, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars following on December 17, 2027.
