James Gunn said that he just recently killed a DCU project that had already been greenlit.
Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU officially kicked off at Warner Bros. Pictures in December 2024 with the animated Creature Commandos series. Gunn’s Superman movie is now scheduled to be released in United States theaters in less than a month, while Peacemaker Season 2 arrives in August.
Supergirl, Lanterns, and Clayface are all expected to arrive in 2026, while a number of other DCU projects — including The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, The Authority, Waller, etc. — are in various stages of development.
What did James Gunn say about the DCU project that was just killed?
Speaking with Rolling Stone, James Gunn said that he just recently decided not to move forward with a DCU movie that had already been greenlit. Gunn didn’t specifically name what the project was; however, he did explain that it was because of a less-than-stellar screenplay.
“Everybody wanted to make the movie,” he explained. “It was greenlit, ready to go. The screenplay wasn’t ready. And I couldn’t do a movie where the screenplay’s not good. And we’ve been really lucky so far, because Supergirl’s script was so f—ing good off the bat. And then Lanterns came in, and the script was so f—ing good. Clayface, same thing. So f—ing good. So we have these scripts that we’ve been really lucky with or wise in our choices or whatever the combination is.”
At this time, there hasn’t been any official announcement about a specific DC Studios project being removed from the studio’s release plans. It’s possible that Gunn could be referring to Sgt. Rock, as development on that project was recently paused; although, there have been a number of different reasons cited by various outlets as to why that movie isn’t coming to fruition at this time.
