Daniel Radcliffe Throws Cold Water on Wolverine Rumors: ‘I Got Buff Because I Am Obsessive’

Daniel Radcliffe has confirmed he didn’t “get buff” to play Wolverine in the MCU.

In a new video posted by Vanity Fair, Merrily We Roll Along’s Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez interviewed Radcliffe, who also stars in the Broadway musical, while he was attached to a lie detector. At one point, Mendez asked Radcliffe if he was the one who started the rumors stating he might play Marvel’s Wolverine.

“No,” Radcliffe quickly answered. “I got buff because I am obsessive. You’ve seen my parents, they’re like insane fitness people and so that’s been passed on. But no, no Wolverine. Flattered, but no.”

Daniel Radcliffe has spoken about the Wolverine rumors before

Rumors claiming the Harry Potter star may be in talks to play Wolverine have appeared online for years. In 2022, he told ComicBook, “So many times, people come to me like, ‘Hey man, heard the Wolverine news, that’s pretty cool.’ No, I don’t know anything about it. Like, I appreciate that somebody is clearly going like ‘Wolverine’s actually short in the comic books, you should get like a short guy to do it!’ But I don’t see myself, I don’t see them going from Hugh Jackman to me. But who knows? Prove me wrong, Marvel.”

Jackman has portrayed Wolverine numerous times since 2000’s X-Men. He’s set to reprise his role in Deadpool 3 alongside Ryan Reynolds’ Merc With a Mouth. Deadpool 3 currently has a release date set for May 3, 2024; although, there’s been a lot of chatter as to whether or not it will be able to keep said date given the movie was only halfway done filming when the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strike began in July 2023.

Along with starring in the Harry Potter franchise and the Stephen Sondheim revival, Radcliffe is also known for 2012’s The Woman in Black, 2013’s Horns, 2016’s Swiss Army Man, 2016’s Now You See Me 2, 2019’s Guns Akimbo, and 2022’s Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. He also played various roles in TBS’ Miracle Workers series.
