Jason and Ivan Reitman Appear in a New Ghostbusters: Afterlife Featurette

It’s been more than three decades since the classic Ghostbusters series wrapped up in 1989. But hopefully, Ghostbusters: Afterlife will return the franchise to glory when it hits theaters this fall. And who better to pick up the baton than Jason Reitman, the son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman? In a new featurette for the upcoming sequel, the father-and-son duo discuss what it means to pass the torch after so many years.

Anyone hoping to see new footage from the film or learn new story details isn’t going to find that here. Instead, fans will have to settle for some father-son bonding. Growing up as the son of a famous director obviously has its perks, including easy access to iconic film sets. And the first set Jason Reitman can remember visiting was the original Ghostbusters in 1984. He described the experience as “magical,” although his cameo in the film ended up getting cut. Now, he’s continuing the saga with a story that’s also primarily about family.

“It was very emotional to see that story living again after so many years through my son,” said Ivan.

Jason also pointed out that he’s now the same age that his father was when he directed the first Ghostbusters. In another instance of life imitating art, Afterlife provides a means to understand what mind of a man his dad was when he made that movie in the same way that the new film’s lead characters, Phoebe and Callie, are trying to understand their own roots.

“Jason had a remarkable responsibility,” added Ivan. “Having to deal with his father on the set and also the history and iconography of 35 years of audiences all over the world getting to know this movie. And he took it on, which I thought was a brave thing to do.”

Ghostbusters: Afterlife opens on November 11.
