Benioff and Weiss Might Not Write All of Their Own Star Wars Scripts

In addition to Rian Johnson’s upcoming trilogy, Lucasfilm also intends to release yet another series of Star Wars movies written and produced by Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed back in May that the first Star Wars film to be released after December’s The Rise of Skywalker would be the inaugural entry in Benioff and Weiss’ trilogy. No one knows what to expect, but it turns out that the duo might not be as heavily involved with the films as we previously thought.

The Hollywood Reporter has published a feature mentions Benioff and Weiss are currently writing a “treatment” for their new Star Wars trilogy. Additionally, THR claims that Benioff and Weiss are only committed to writing “at least one of the films.”

When Disney announced Benioff and Weiss’ trilogy, the implication was clear that they would write their own films. If THR’s report is true, it suggests that Benioff and Weiss’ pact with Netflix might take up a hefty chunk of their time. Still, it’s hard to imagine them prioritizing anything over one of the most beloved franchises in cinema.

It’s possible that Benioff and Weiss could take on a role similar to George Lucas’ involvement with the original trilogy. Although Lucas wrote and directed the original Star Wars in 1977, he only received a “story by” credit on The Empire Strikes Back. He went on to co-write the screenplay for Return of the Jedi with Lawrence Kasdan.

How do you feel about David Benioff and D.B. Weiss only writing one of their Star Wars films? Who would you choose to write the other two installments? Tell us what you think in the comment section below!
