Confirmation of the film’s budget comes from Variety, though the numbers for the movie’s marketing budget are not yet known. For most big-budget films, like Superman 2025 and The Fantastic First: First Steps, their break-even point is approximately 2.5 times their production budget. While this rough estimate doesn’t necessarily apply to mid-tier projects like Weapons, it does provide a cursory range for how well it needs to perform at the box office.
On that note, Weapons is well on its way of becoming profitable for Warner Bros. In just its opening weekend, the film has already earned over $71 million globally, with $43 million coming from the domestic box office and $28 million from the international box office. So even if the movie sees a 50% decline in its second weekend, it will still cross the $100 million threshold and likely be in the black for Warner Bros.
By comparison, Cregger’s 2022 film Barbarian, which was also a sleeper hit, only had a budget of $4 million but made an impressive $40 million at the global box office. Most of that, $40 million, came domestically. This success likely led Warner Bros. to provide Cregger a substantial budget of $38 million, which is over eight times the budget for Barbarian. And with the outlook of Weapons looking bright, Cregger is already establishing himself as a force to be reckoned with in the genre.
