Smurfs recently came out in theaters, and many are curious to find out which character Natasha Lyonne voices in the animated movie. The movie centers around the Smurfs, who set out on a quest to rescue Papa Smurf after he gets abducted. Along the way, they discover new characters and learn about their destiny to save the world. Here’s all you need to know about Lyonne’s animated character.
Is Natasha Lyonne in Smurfs and who does she play?
Lyonne voices the character of Mama Poot in Smurfs.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Natasha Lyonne revealed that she initially thought she’d be voicing a different character in Smurfs, but ultimately ended up as Mama Poot. She disclosed that she was initially asked via email if she would like to be a part of Smurfs, and she instantly said yes. She initially believed she would be voicing Smurfette, only to later discover that the role had been given to Rihanna.
In another interview, Lyonne talked about her character and explained what the word Poot means. She said, “I’m pretty sure she runs some sort of underground operation involving a speedy vehicle. And when Papa Smurf gets kidnapped, Smurfette’s got one and only solution: go to Mama Poot. Because, well, she’s the mama for the job.”
Additionally, she mentioned what she thinks was fun about voicing Mama Poot. “What’s so fun about Mama Poot is just..it’s pretty funny that she’s really like some…I don’t know…iteration of eccentricity that clearly lives within this overly eccentric package that I’m bringing to the table,” she added. Although she wasn’t confident initially on bringing this character to life, she eventually connected with her, and now to her it feels like an “extension of something inside” her.
Smurfs is now playing in U.S. theaters.
