Why Was The Wheel of Time Canceled by Prime Video?

Prime Video officially canceled The Wheel of Time after three seasons, leaving fans wondering about the reason behind it. Amazon quietly announced the news on a Friday evening, just before a long holiday weekend, a move people often dub a tactic to bury unfavorable updates. Despite the show’s loyal fanbase and story arc, many fans now wonder why Amazon canceled The Wheel of Time. Here’s a breakdown.

Why The Wheel of Time got canceled after Season 3

The Wheel of Time was one of many big-budget fantasy projects greenlit during the peak of the “streaming wars,” when platforms raced to find the next Game of Thrones. Under former Amazon MGM Studios head Jennifer Salke, the company invested heavily in epic franchises. These included The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and The Wheel of Time. However, when Salke was ousted earlier this year, her expensive yet beloved projects came under the chop.

With Mike Hopkins now leading Amazon’s entertainment division, the focus shifted to cost-cutting, and The Wheel of Time, despite its strong fan following, didn’t achieve the mainstream breakout success of shows like The Boys or Reacher. In a streaming era where profitability matters more than ever, the show became an unfortunate casualty.

For those unaware, Rafe Judkins’ adaptation didn’t try to mirror Robert Jordan’s original work word for word. Instead, it reshaped the 14-book saga into something new, as fans describe it: a show unafraid to mix timelines, rework characters, and highlight themes that had long lingered in subtext. The show celebrated queer relationships, put women in leading roles, and flipped traditional fantasy archetypes on their heads.

From the mystical Aiel city of Rhuidean to Perrin’s defense of the Two Rivers, Season 3 pushed narrative and visual boundaries that set it apart from other fantasy adaptations. So, although it gained critical acclaim and a devoted fanbase, the show never became the global sensation Amazon hoped for. All in all, The Wheel of Time simply didn’t align with the new business model.

However, fans aren’t giving up. Petitions are already circulating to save the show or find it a new streaming home. After all, fans were waiting for Season 4 as The Wheel of Time Season 3 ended with a cliffhanger.
