Adding to the fascinating lore of Jurassic Park, which featured genetically engineered dinosaurs, the new Jurassic World Rebirth introduces hybrid mutant monsters like the magnanimous Distortus Rex. Of course, this adds some exciting twists to the story, even though it may not sit well with some Jurassic Park purists.
Here is a breakdown of what the Distortus Rex is.
What is the Distortus Rex mutant dinosaur in Jurassic World Rebirth?
Jurassic World Rebirth seems heavily centered around the mutated monster, Distortus Rex. Fans get the first glimpse of the mutated dinosaur in the opening minutes of the film. It appears in a flashback where there is a “containment failure” at the InGen research facility. The sequence ends with the huge, monstrous creature grabbing a man and disappearing.
The events of the movie take place 17 years after this, where a group of mercenaries and scientists go to retrieve genetic material from dinosaurs whose DNA can provide life-saving benefits to mankind.
As the group reaches the island, they inevitably face Distortus Rex. Following their journey, the movie slowly reveals what the huge creature is and how it came to be.
Distortus Rex started as an attempt by InGen to genetically modify a Tyrannosaurus Rex. But the attempt went wrong on multiple levels. With DNA fragments from other animals introduced into the genome, the Distortus Rex became a mutant monstrosity, which was even harder to contain.
Distortus Rex is 26 feet tall and 47 feet long and weighs over 20,000 pounds. It has distorted features that look more like an alien breed than real dinosaurs. The visual effects team put in significant effort in rendering this monster. Ultimately, they gave it a very disturbing visual appeal, alongside great presence and ferocity.
Of course, Distortus Rex also becomes the primary adversary during the climax. The group is left to overcome this huge, mutated challenge to succeed in their goal.
Jurassic World Rebirth hits the theatres on July 2, 2025.
