The All-New Venom series opened with the mystery of who the newest host of the symbiote was. Several suspects were put forth, but it turned out to be longtime Spider-Man love interest Mary Jane Watson. Now the tale can be told of just how MJ and Venom became partners in crime-fighting.

Written by Al Ewing, with art by Carlos Gomez, the comic reveals that MJ and the symbiote connected during the Venom War event. Armed with technology created by her new boyfriend, Paul, Mary Jane Watson had begun fighting crime as the hero Jackpot. Unfortunately, the technology is unreliable on a good day, giving MJ different superpowers entirely at random.
When this led to Mary Jane being endangered, the symbiote acted in accordance with the wishes of Peter Parker, whom it was briefly bonded to during Venom War. The symbiote saved her, but both were left in a weakened state. This necessitated their bonding, though neither of them was happy with the new arrangement.

Why Mary Jane Watson is better as Venom than Jackpot
It’s understandable why Mary Jane isn’t happy as a symbiote host. While it’s unclear how many of the classic stories where Peter and MJ were married are still canon, it did still try to bond to the man she loved. That tends to make things awkward, even if the stories where Venom stalked Mary Jane are no longer exactly canon. However, that conflict is what makes the core concept of All-New Venom so appealing.

Forcing the symbiote and Mary Jane together is a maddening idea to most classic Spider-Man fans. And yet, the idea is instantly interesting and makes for an engaging story. It also gives Mary Jane more agency as a hero, as she’s no longer dependent on her boyfriend’s unreliable tech. This fact has apparently occurred to Paul as well, who seems equally uncomfortable with how close the symbiote is to MJ.
