BRZRKR: Keanu Reeves’ Immortal Warrior Stars in New Western Comic

BOOM! Studios has announced BRZRKR: A Faceful of Bullets — a new one-shot from the world of Keanu Reeves and Matt Kindt’s BRZRKR.

BRZRKR: A Faceful of Bullets #1 arrives this June from writer Jason Aaron and artist Francesco Manna. The book kicks off the second volume of BRZRKR: Bloodlines — a “series of standalone extra-length comic specials” starring franchise protagonist B. (an immortal warrior drawn in Reeves’ likeness). With this new special, Aaron and Manna venture to the 19th-century American West to reveal an “unexplored chapter in B.’s violent history.”

At this time, BOOM! has shared artist Dan Mora‘s character designs for BRZRKR: A Faceful of Bullets #1. The publisher has also shared variant covers for the comic by Matteo Scalera, R.M. Guéra, and Mahmud Asrar. Check all that out below:

What to expect from BRZRKR: A Faceful of Bullets

An official synopsis for Aaron and Manna’s BRZRKR special reads as follows: “When B. finds himself in the middle of a grudge match between a greedy land baron and his runaway daughter, he must decide if he will play the role of a guardian angel, or succumb to his violent tendencies. And when the runaway prays for the vengeance she so obsessively clings to, God’s answer might be more than she bargained for…”

“Having new writers and artists explore B.’s history in these Bloodlines Specials is something that is so exciting to me,” Reeves said. “Jason and Francesco teaming up for a brutal, tragic Western was a perfect match for BRZRKR and the types of stories we want to tell in this universe.”

“The world of BRZRKR is so visceral and action-packed that I’ve been a fan from the very beginning,” Aaron added. “So it’s super exciting to get to craft the first Wild West chapter of this epic saga, in the grim and gritty spirit of Leone, Corbucci, and Peckinpah.”

Manna echoed this sentiment. “When I was a child I used to watch so many Western movies with my dad,” the artist said. “I was in love with Leone, Corbucci, and Ford. I didn’t understand why or how, I just felt like there was some kind of magic that kept me hooked, watching and watching again and again. It’s very inspiring to let BRZRKR play with that magic and create a fresh and bloody vision of those old fashioned vibes.”

BRZRKR is an ever-expanding comic saga

The original BRZRKR ran for 12 issues at BOOM! from March 2021 to March 2023. The series teamed writers/creators Reeves and Kindt with artist Ron Garney, inker/colorist Bill Crabtree, and letterer Clem Robins. BOOM! has also put out spin-off one-shots — with A Faceful of Bullets being only the latest. Previous examples include BRZRKR: Poetry of Madness and BRZRKR: Fallen Empire.

Furthermore, Netflix is currently developing both a live-action film and an animated series based on BRZRKR. The Batman – Part II co-screenwriter Mattson Tomlin (who also wrote Fallen Empire) is writing the former. Reeves is attached to star in both adaptations.

BRZRKR: A Faceful of Bullets #1 goes on sale in June 2024 from BOOM! Studios.
