Epix’s Pennyworth Inspires DC’s Latest Comic Book Miniseries

Nobody expected Pennyworth to be a hit when it premiered on Epix in 2019. But after two seasons, the show’s youthful incarnation of Batman’s butler is finally crossing over to the comic book realm. DC (via GamesRadar) has announced that a new Pennyworth miniseries is arriving later this summer.

Taking the reins of the new series are writer Scott Bryan Wilson and artist Juan Gedeon. Over the course of seven issues, they’ll craft a tale of espionage concerning not just the young Alfred played by Jack Bannon on Pennyworth, but his older, wizened self as well.

The series’ official description reads, “Spanning the years between the hit TV show and today, Pennyworth tells the continuing adventures of Alfred Pennyworth as an MI6 counterintelligence agent – this time in Cold War-era Soviet Russia. When Alfred and his partner receive intelligence that nuclear weapons are being manufactured near the Arctic Circle, they’re off to infiltrate the remote military base to learn more. But things don’t go exactly as planned. And the ramifications of this mission may be more far-reaching than anyone could have guessed, as our present-day butler gets dragged back into his past…”

In the meantime, the jury’s still out on whether Pennyworth will return for a third season. Earlier this month, it was reported that producers were looking to find the series a new home on HBO Max.

Pennyworth #1 hits comic shops on August 10. You can check out Jorge Fornes’ cover for the first issue below.
