Paramount+ has released the first trailer for the Golden Axe adult animated comedy series, inspired by Sega’s classic 1989 video game. The Emmy Award winner, Matthew Rhys, will lend his voice to one of the main characters in the upcoming series.
As per the official synopsis, Golden Axe follows legendary warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead. The trio reunites to protect the kingdom of Yuria from Death Adder in the series. However, the evil giant has a habit of returning from the dead. Their mission becomes more complicated when Hampton Squib joins them. Together, they must find a way to stop Adder despite their flaws.

What do we see in the Golden Axe trailer?
The trailer opens with the three heroes, namely Ax, Tyris, and Gilius, reuniting and strategizing their battle plans to defeat Death Adder, the evil giant who wields the Golden Axe. Upon asking for a defeat plan, Tyris responds that they have to “face a series of progressively harder enemies until we have a big final battle with Death Adder.”
Then the trailer shows inexperienced Hampton on an adventure with Gilius after joining their quest. He quickly falls into a trap, prompting Gilius to sarcastically remark, “Found a trap on the first try.”
The footage also includes jokes about mini-bosses and Tyris shouting “Sega!” before charging into the battle. In the ending moments, Gilius reads out the show’s title before adding, “Whoa! Like the game, Heck Yeah Let’s Freaking Go!”
Matthew Rhys voices Gilius Thunderhead, a dwarf with poor hygiene, while Danny Pudi voices Hampton Squib, an inexperienced adventurer desperate to become a hero. Lisa Gilroy voices Tyris Flare, while Liam McIntyre plays Ax Battler. Carl Tart also voices the humanoid panther Chronos “Evil” Lait.
Mike McMahan and Joe Chandler co-created the show and also co-wrote the premiere episode. Chandler also serves as showrunner. CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, Sony Pictures Television, and Original Film produce the series, with Sega executives and many others also serving as executive producers.
All 10 episodes of the Golden Axe series will arrive exclusively on Paramount+ on September 16, 2026.
