Wonder Man: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II on Where Season 2 Would’ve Gone Before Cancellation

Marvel fans now have an idea of what Wonder Man Season 2 could have explored before Disney+ canceled the series. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who played the role of Simon Williams, opened up about his hopes for his character’s future.

The actor “stayed away” from the conversation about the next season, but he said, “I had my hopes and my dreams about where I wanted the character to go for season two.” He was especially interested in exploring what happens when Simon achieves the fame and recognition he has always wanted.

Wonder Man Season 2 was canceled in July 2026, just four months after Disney had renewed it for a second season. Abdul-Mateen II said he was told that it “had something to do with the viewership numbers.” The cancellation came shortly after he received an Emmy nomination for his performance as Simon.

Reflecting on where Simon could have gone next, Abdul-Mateen II wanted to explore an interesting question: “What do you do when you finally get everything that you’ve always wanted?” He added that Simon “has a big heart, but he also has an ego. He also wants to be a star.”

What was the first season of Marvel’s Wonder Man about?

The first season introduced Simon Williams as a struggling Hollywood actor who was desperate to get his career back on track. However, he secretly possessed superpowers, creating conflict between his life as an aspiring actor and his identity as a superhero.

His life changes when he crosses paths with Trevor Slattery, the former actor played by Ben Kingsley. They become friends, and Trevor helps Simon deal with the difficult world of auditions and acting. Their friendship becomes an important part of the story as both characters attempt to find another chance at success in Hollywood.

Simon learns that acclaimed director Von Kovak was remaking the superhero film Wonder Man, giving him a chance to pursue the role that could transform his acting career. His efforts to get the role become a major part of the season as he tries to balance his professional ambitions with his secret powers.

The eight-episode season premiered on Disney+ on January 27, 2026. Created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, the show also stars X Mayo, Zlatko Burić, Arian Moayed, Joe Pantoliano, Byron Bowers, and Josh Gad.
