One of DC’s live-action superhero series is preparing to leave Netflix. Black Lightning will soon be leaving the streaming platform after making all four seasons available to subscribers for years. The series earned strong praise from critics during its television run while building a loyal fan base.
Black Lightning is leaving Netflix next month
Netflix is set to remove all four seasons of DC’s Black Lightning next month. According to What’s on Netflix, the superhero series will leave the streaming platform on September 1, 2026.
Created by Salim Akil, Black Lightning premiered on The CW on January 16, 2018, and concluded on May 24, 2021. The DC series centers on Jefferson Pierce, a respected school principal who abandoned his life as the superhero Black Lightning years earlier. However, when gang violence begins to threaten his family and the community he serves, Jefferson is forced to put the suit back on.
Jefferson’s return as Black Lightning places him in direct conflict with The One Hundred, a powerful local gang responsible for much of the violence in the city. As he resumes his role as a masked vigilante, he must confront growing threats while continuing to support his school and daughters.
Cress Williams stars as Jefferson Pierce, also known as Black Lightning. The series also features Nafessa Williams as Anissa Pierce, Christine Adams as Lynn Stewart, Marvin “Krondon” Jones III as Tobias Whale, and James Remar as Peter Gambi, among others.
Black Lightning received strong reviews from critics throughout its run. On Rotten Tomatoes, the series holds an average 92 percent critics score. Audience response was considerably weaker, with the series earning an average 49 percent audience score.
In a review, Graeme Virtue of The Guardian called the series “a welcome bright spot in the doldrums of January and an intriguing attempt to recharge superhero TV.”
