According to Scorpion actor Michael Mando, a real-life fight interrupted the filming of one of Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s post-credit scenes. The scene between him and Michael Keaton’s Vulture teases Scorpion’s return in the recently released Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Michael Mando’s Scorpion scene took a wild turn inside a real prison
Filming a superhero movie usually means choreographed action, but Michael Mando says Spider-Man: Homecoming briefly became a real-life drama. The actor recently revealed that an actual prison fight broke out while he and Michael Keaton were filming one of the movie’s post-credits scenes, forcing Marvel to redub all of the dialogue later in post-production.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Mando recalled that the sequence was shot inside a functioning prison rather than a studio set. Midway through production, inmates started fighting, abruptly interrupting filming. “A fight broke out,” he said, explaining that the team later had to rerecord the entire conversation through ADR. Despite calling the experience “really fun,” he admitted it was also “nerve-racking” because the cast was working in a facility where people were actively serving sentences.
The prison scene marked the first on-screen meeting in the MCU between Mac Gargan, better known to comic fans as Scorpion, and Adrian Toomes, the Vulture, after both characters ended up behind bars. Back then, plenty of fans thought Marvel was laying the groundwork for Scorpion to become Spider-Man’s next big foe. But the MCU took a different route. Spider-Man: Far From Home put Mysterio front and center, ending with Peter Parker’s identity being exposed, while Spider-Man: No Way Home went all in on the multiverse by bringing back previous Spider-Men and some of the franchise’s most iconic villains.
Mando said he never obsessed over Scorpion’s long absence from the MCU. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, he explained that he doesn’t spend time trying to map out his career, choosing instead to believe that the right opportunities come along when they’re meant to. That mindset eventually paid off, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day bringing Mac Gargan back almost ten years after his first Marvel appearance.
