Sony’s Uncharted Movie Will Begin Streaming on Netflix in July

As far as video game adaptations go, Uncharted didn’t do much to help the genre’s reputation when it hit theaters back in February. In fact, its lukewarm critical response probably kept a lot of gamers from seeing the film on the big screen. But starting next month, fans (specifically those with a Netflix subscription) will be able to watch the movie at home at no extra charge. According to What’s on Netflix, Uncharted will hit the streaming service on July 15 in the U.S.

Of course,  Uncharted didn’t randomly end up on Netflix for its streaming debut. Sony inked a deal with the platform last year giving them first access to all of their upcoming films once they complete their theatrical runs. The deal took effect with Sony’s 2022 slate, which began with Uncharted earlier this year. The film’s streaming release comes five months after its theatrical premiere. And this gives us a pretty good idea for when we can expect Sony’s second 2022 blockbuster (and we use that term loosely), Morbius, to follow suit. Since Morbius hit the big screen on April 1, the movie will mostly likely arrive on Netflix sometime in September.

Although the Uncharted filmmakers have indicated a willingness to return for a sequel, Sony still hasn’t made any official announcements. Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg headlined the movie as Nathan Drake and Victor “Sully” Sullivan respectively, leading a cast that also included Antonio Banderas, Sophia Ali, and Tati Gabrielle. Many critics felt the movie failed to do the original video games justice. But despite its poor word of mouth, the film was a box office success. It raked in over $400 million worldwide and became the year’s fifth highest-grossing release.
