Gotham Knights Director Teases the Bat Family’s Character Growth

Last month, Gotham Knights was one of two big video games announced at DC FanDome. Judging by the footage shown, the game looks like it borrows elements that made Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham series a hit. However, it’s since been confirmed that the game takes place in its own continuity, which allows the developers at WB Games Montréal to put their own stamp on the DC mythos with a story headlined by Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing, and Red Hood. While speaking with the official Playstation Blog, creative director Patrick Redding revealed how players will see these characters develop as they progress through the campaign.

Unlike every entry in the Arkham saga, Gotham Knights won’t take place over the course of one single night. Instead, the in-game story unfolds over a longer timeframe. Redding also confirmed that each character will have his or her own ability tree to match their unique combat styles. Additionally, “craftable gear” can be upgraded using XP points earned via open-world activities.

“It’s not one story set over one night,” said Redding. “But really about the mid to long term growth of the hero. The game affords players a huge amount of growth and a huge amount of goal setting in an open world environment that they need to protect, that they need to go back to again and again.”

Redding continued, “It’s that idea of how this new guard of younger heroes – that are not Bruce Wayne, are not Batman – approach the problem of equipping and training themselves up, preparing and adapting for that next major threat, that next major menace that they’re going to need to combat?”

Gotham Knights will be released in 2021.
