Lanterns star Garret Dillahunt breaks the silence on his Black Hand fan casting. Last year, Dillahunt shared a post on his Instagram story, leading fans to speculate that he might be playing the villain Black Hand.
In a recent interview with Nerd Reactor, the actor opened up about the same. When asked about fan casting theory, Dillahunt said, “I just thought it was cool that someone was out there with some theories, you know. I wasn’t trying to confirm or deny anything at all.”
“I was like, ‘Oh, that’s interesting. I wonder what they- you know, cool theory, bro,'” he added while winking, “I can’t say, but it’s good that people are excited and are trying to solve it. I can’t come out and be like, ‘Hey, let me ruin the show for you.'”
The61-year-old also added that if he is not part of an episode or plot within the storyline, the production won’t allow him to see the script. This is done to prevent the actors from spoiling the show.
Dillahunt also stated that when he watches post-filming scenes, he finally understands another scene that was filmed before, calling the process “cool and fun” to watch. “The left hand doesn’t know what the right hand’s doing a lot of times on these big shows.”
How the viral Black Hand theory started
The fan theory of Garret Dillahunt playing Black Hand started in September last year. Moreover, Dillahunt is playing William Maccon, and the supervillain’s name is William Hand, making fans instantly connect the first names of the two.
Maccon is portrayed as an antagonist who is “self-righteous, conspiracy-minded modern cowboy who hides ruthless ambition behind a charming exterior.” Black Hand is an inventive genius responsible for creating a device that is capable of absorbing the residue of a Green Lantern ring’s energy.
The upcoming Lanterns show follows a murder-mystery storyline. In the show, Hal Jordan and John Stewart investigate a dark crime in the American heartland, Nebraska. The HBO series is set to premiere on August 16, 2026.
