One of The Witcher’s lead stars nearly exited the series after a major casting shift changed the show’s direction. With the departure of a key figure, doubts emerged behind the scenes about whether to continue. The actor ultimately stayed, but not without serious consideration and time away from the spotlight.
Freya Allan almost left The Witcher but chose to stay for Season 4
Freya Allan considered leaving The Witcher after Henry Cavill’s departure but ultimately chose to stay for Season four, according to an interview with NME. She said she spent “solid amount of time contemplating exiting the show. “Once I’d made that choice, I made the most of every moment.”
Her decision followed the unexpected news of Cavill’s exit, which she received while on the set of Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes. “I cried because I wanted to finish the show with the guy that played my adoptive father,” Allan shared. The moment prompted her to reflect on her own future with the show.
In Season four, Ciri’s arc evolves as she joins The Rats and faces major challenges. “Ciri’s no longer that innocent child we first met [in season one],” said Allan. “She’s trying to figure out who she is and that unfortunately involves making some mistakes along the way.”
She takes a human life for the first time, starts a sexual relationship with Mistle, and fails to save The Rats, resulting in her capture. “There are sometimes certain things that Netflix is afraid to bring to life but I’m glad they stuck to the books for that. It’s such a pivotal part of Ciri’s journey.”
Allan stayed out of the country during the release of season four in October 2025. “There were a lot of big, terrifying changes so I removed myself from it as much as I could.” She relied on the books to guide her performance and said, “I really want to give fans what they want,” especially after Cavill, who also advocated for book accuracy, left the series.
