Harry Potter’s Lucius Malfoy Actor Gives Update on HBO Series

Johnny Flynn, best known for Emma and Lovesick, recently shared new details about his upcoming work on HBO’s Harry Potter series. During a red-carpet interview, the actor confirmed that he has already filmed scenes for the first season, teasing his early involvement in the project long before his character’s expected debut.

Johnny Flynn reveals he has filmed scenes for Harry Potter Season 1

Actor Johnny Flynn has confirmed that he has already filmed scenes as Lucius Malfoy for HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series. Speaking at the BFI London Film Festival premiere of his new film & Sons, Flynn told, “It’s good, I’ve only done a little bit and I’m just giddy as a fan of the stories, of the books really. I still remember reading the books as a teenager, and they meant so much to me and so much to my kids, so it’s really cool to be a part of this” (via Collider).

Flynn’s involvement in Season 1 marks a deviation from J.K. Rowling’s source material, as Lucius Malfoy does not appear until Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. According to reports, the first season adapts The Philosopher’s Stone, yet new material may expand the story to include Lucius’ early connections to Lord Voldemort or the Malfoy family’s influence in the wizarding world.

Flynn said he hasn’t spoken to Jason Isaacs, who originally played Lucius Malfoy in the Warner Bros. films. “We haven’t spoken since I got cast, but we did a film together a few years ago, and we got on very well and he’s a sweetheart,” he shared. Isaacs later voiced his support on social media, praising Flynn as “a fantastic actor” and “a lovely man.”

Production photos show that Season 1 includes flashbacks from The Deathly Hallows, portraying the night James and Lily Potter died. Francesca Gardiner writes and executive-produces the series, while Mark Mylod directs multiple episodes. Dominic McLaughlin stars as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. HBO is filming the series across the United Kingdom, with a planned 2027 premiere.
