Wonder Man Might Be the Lead-in to MCU’s X-Men Mutant Saga

Marvel’s Wonder Man show could be the project that really kicks off the MCU’s Mutant Saga.

Following the release of some new Wonder Man footage, there’s much talk and excitement about the new Disney+ show arriving in December that stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Not too much is known about the plot at this time, which inevitably means that fans are running rampant with speculation about what surprises may be in store.

One theory is that, given the character’s long history with a specific mutant character, Wonder Man could be key to the X-Men’s MCU introduction.

Wonder Man ties together the X-Men with the greater Marvel universe

In Marvel Comics, Wonder Man and Hank McCoy/Beast have a close relationship with one another. They were both Avengers teammates at one point; however, the dynamic between the two of them quickly won over fans, and they have proceeded to co-star in a number of series and runs together over the years.

We know that an MCU X-Men movie is in the works from Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier; we likely won’t know much more about that project or who will star in it until after Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, but we know it’s coming.

We also know that a number of X-Men characters will star in Avengers: Doomsday, including Kelsey Grammer’s Beast, who briefly appeared at the end of The Marvels. Whether or not he’ll continue to reprise that role after Doomsday remains to be seen, but Wonder Man could be the gap that bridges the X-Men world with the rest of the MCU.

How the Wonder Man series could lead into the X-Men MCU premiere

While all we can do is speculate at this time, the Wonder Man series could see Abdul-Mateen II’s Simon Williams and Grammer’s Beast strike some sort of friendship. Grammer has not been announced as part of the show’s cast (even if he is, he may only show up for a brief moment or two), and this plot point would require some universe-jumping, but they could make contact with one another in some way, shape, or form.

Then, if Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars replace the previous X-Men stars with new cast members, it could set-up an interesting dynamic between Wonder Man and the new Beast; if Simon has already met Hank from a different reality, maybe he’ll be curious to meet the new Hank and that could lead to some sort of team-up project between the two of them.

It might sound a little far-fetched, but, again, we know next to nothing about the Wonder Man show’s story. It also wouldn’t be totally new ground for Marvel Television, either. While they seem to be setting up their own little pocket world with Daredevil: Born Again and the return of Jessica Jones, the Ms. Marvel miniseries gave Iman Vellani’s character a mutant origin story.

This means that, as Marvel Studios heads toward the Mutant Saga, the Disney+ shows will likely play into it, too, to some degree. Wonder Man could be the perfect place for it to start.
