The Last of Us co-showrunner and creator of the video game series Neil Druckmann released an update today on the third season of the show that will have some fans unhappy.
What is the latest The Last of Us Season 3 update?
In a message sent out on game developer Naughty Dog’s official X account, Druckmann announced that he would be stepping back from his creative involvement with the HBO adaptation of the game.
According to Druckmann, he will be stepping away from the show before any “meaningful work” on Season 3 starts. The reason for leaving, Druckmann said, is to put his “complete focus” on Naughty Dog’s ongoing projects, including its next game, the sci-fi project, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
As a result, Craig Mazin — who worked as co-showrunner beside Druckmann — will likely continue writing and directing the series.
“I’ve made the difficult decision to step away from my creative involvement in The Last of Us on HBO,” Druckmann said in his statement. “With work completed on season 2 and before any meaningful work starts on season 3, now is the right time for me to transition my complete focus to Naughty Dog and its future projects, including writing and directing our exciting next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, along with my responsibilities as Studio Head and Head of Creative.
“Co-creating the show has been a career highlight. It’s been an honor to work alongside Craig Mazin to executive produce, direct and write on the last two seasons. I’m deeply thankful for the thoughtful approach and dedication the talented cast and crew took to adapting The Last of Us Part I and the continued adaptation of The Last of Us Part II.”
Druckmann currently serves as the head and head of creative of Naughty Dog, and is credited with creating The Last of Us game series, as well as co-creating the show.
