Nicole Kassell Will Direct Amazon’s Live-Action She-Ra Series

The live-action She-Ra series has found a director to whisk Amazon Prime subscribers away to Eternia. According to Variety, Nicole Kassell has signed on to helm the show’s pilot.

Amazon announced that the series was in development last September. The character of She-Ra was introduced as Adora, the long-lost twin sister of He-Man, and she made her first appearance in a 1984 minicomic that accompanied her original action figure. She later starred in 1985’s He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword before eventually getting her own animated series, She-Ra: Princess of Power, that same year. In 2018, Netflix rebooted the character with She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, which ended its five-season run in 2020.

In addition to directing the pilot, Kassell will also serve as one of She-Ra’s executive producers. DreamWorks Animation, which also developed the Netflix series, is executive producing as well. The project will mark the first time that the title character has appeared in live-action. But for now, a series order isn’t guaranteed. Variety also notes that Amazon still hasn’t hired a writer for the show.

Kassell is probably best known for directing three episodes of HBO’s Watchmen. As an executive producer on the show, she shared in its 2020 Emmy win for Outstanding Limited Series. Kassell also received her own Emmy nod for directing Watchmen’s first episode, but she ultimately lost to Maria Schrader for Netflix’s Unorthodox. Over the years, Kassell has directed episodes of other shows like Better Call Saul, Westworld, Castle Rock, and The Americans. Most recently, she helmed the pilot for HBO’s The Baby.
