AMC’s Tales of the Walking Dead Spinoff Gets a Series Order
Plans for the show were originally announced last year when AMC confirmed that The Walking Dead would end after season 11. Channing Powell, who has previously worked as a writer and producer on both The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead, is heading up the new spinoff as showrunner. Scott M. Gimple, the franchise’s content chief, is working on the series as well, with an eye to start production early next year.
AMC’s initial order for Tales of the Walking Dead guarantees at least six episodes. Each installment will follow different survivors in their desperate attempts to fend off the undead. And while some episodes will bring new faces into the universe, others will revisit familiar characters from the past.
“I started as a fan of The Walking Dead and have ended up as a showrunner of what will hopefully be one of its most unique spinoffs,” said Powell in a new statement. “That’s nuts and I’m so grateful to AMC and Scott for supporting me and my writers while we pushed, pulled and poked at the boundaries of this universe to bring you something new and unexpected, while hopefully still tending to what core audiences loved so much about the flagship show.”
“This series, more than any other in the Walking Dead Universe, runs on new voices, perspectives and ideas — bringing to life stories unlike any we’ve told before,” added Gimple. “I’m thrilled to be Channing’s consigliere, helping in every way I can to make those new visions real for the best fans in TV.”
Tales of the Walking Dead will premiere in summer 2022 on AMC.
