Mark Millar Describes the Vast Scope and Scale of Jupiter’s Legacy

In May, Netflix will bring the first live-action adaptation of Jupiter’s Legacy to the small screen. It will be the first work by Mark Millar that will hit the streaming service. However, Netflix has bigger plans for the worlds invented by the Scottish comic book writer, as it has already bought the rights for many more installments in the Millarworld. Now, the author — who will also executive produce the upcoming adaptation — seems pretty satisfied with how the scope of his work has been handled at Netflix’s headquarters.

While talking with Empire, Millar teased that his series is “part-2001, part-Avengers, part-Godfather II,” before adding taking on the scope and scale of the show.

“It’s a 50-year story self-contained inside one franchise,” he said. “It’s got a cast of 50 or 60 super-characters. The story starts in 1929 and runs until the end of time. It runs through all time and space and explains the mystery of human existence, all tied into a superhero story.”

Millar praised the work of Netflix in going as ambitious as possible for the upcoming television adaptation of the Image Comics series.

“There hasn’t been one conversation where someone said, ‘Can we make that explosion slightly smaller?’,” he added. “Ambitious ideas are being rewarded.” Empire also debuted a new image that you can see here.

Millar created Jupiter’s Legacy together with artist Frank Quitely in 2013. Now the live-action adaptation will premiere on Netflix on May 7.
