Nearly three years after her first Black Lightning appearance, Chantal Thuy is officially getting added to the main cast. Entertainment Weekly brings word that Thuy, who plays Grace Choi on the show, has been upped to series regular status for Black Lightning’s upcoming fourth season.
Grace debuted in Black Lightning’s third episode, and her role on the series continued to expand from there. As a teenager, she was abducted by a prostitution ring and spent years in captivity. Fortunately, she used her metahuman power of shape-shifting to escape, eventually ending up in Freeland and finding work as a bartender. Grace later struck up a relationship with Jefferson Pierce’s daughter, Anissa (a.k.a. Thunder). Throughout Black Lightning‘s run, Grace and Anissa’s romance has been praised for its representation of LGBTQ characters.

Black Lightning showrunner and executive producer Salim Akil also issued his own statement about Thuy’s promotion:
“Chantal Thuy embodies the character of Grace Choi,” said Akil. “I am sure our Black Lightning fans knew, especially those who follow the Grace and Anissa relationship storyline, that having Chantal join as a series regular was only a matter of time. I am elated to finally welcome her officially to the team.”
This isn’t the only big change coming to Black Lightning season 4. Yesterday, word broke that the new season’s seventh episode will serve as a backdoor pilot for a potential Painkiller spinoff. If successful, this will result in Jordan Calloway leaving the main series.
Black Lightning season 4 will premiere on The CW in February 2021.
