John Noble Will Play Butcher’s Dad in The Boys Season 2

There are only two episodes left in The Boys’ second season, but it still contains some surprises. For example, Karl Urban (Billy Butcher) just revealed a major bit of casting for this week’s installment. Recently, the star took to Instagram to announce that John Noble is guest-starring in the upcoming seventh episode as Butcher’s father. You can check out his post below.

Noble played Walter Bishop on Fringe for five years, the role for which he’s arguably best-known. Additionally, he starred as Denethor in Peter Jackson’s original Lord of the Rings trilogy. (Urban, of course, played Eomer alongside him.) Then in 2015, Noble provided the voice of Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow in Batman: Arkham Knight. Subsequently, he has also shown up on episodes of Sleepy Hollow, Elementary, and Legends of Tomorrow.

The Boys‘ next episode, “Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker,” shares its name with Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s six-issue miniseries published separately from The Boys’ main storyline. That series found Billy returning to England after his father’s death and recounting his life story. Furthermore, readers learned that Butcher (along with his mother and brother) suffered abuse at the hands of his father. And this in turn may explain his violent streak as an adult. Moreover, by describing Sam Butcher as “a brutal force of nature,” Urban seems to be suggesting that Noble’s performance will stick pretty close to how the character was portrayed in the comic.

Hints at Butcher’s past already appeared a few other times this season. A few episodes ago, viewers met his Aunt Judy. And she also told Hughie about Butcher’s dead brother, Lenny.

The Boys will premiere its next episode this Friday on Amazon Prime.
