Star Wars Resistance Producers Confirm an Openly Gay Couple
This Sunday, Star Wars Resistance will premiere its second and final season on Disney Channel. Ahead of the series’ swan song, a few members of the cast and crew recently participated in a press event (via Entertainment Weekly) to discuss what’s in store for Kaz Xiono’s last adventure. Surprisingly, producers Athena Portillo, Justin Ridge, and Brandon Auman used the opportunity to confirm a long-running fan theory about two particular characters.
Orka and Flix, the aliens who run the Colossus’ Office of Acquisitions, were confirmed as the first openly gay couple in Star Wars. When asked if these characters are more than just friends, the producers revealed that this is indeed the case.
“I think it’s safe to say they’re an item, absolutely,” said Ridge. “They’re absolutely a gay couple and we’re proud of that. We love Flix and Orka.”
Fans began speculating about the nature of Orka and Flix’s relationship after Resistance premiered. In “Dangerous Business,” the duo left Kaz in charge of their office while they went to visit Flix’s mother. Their instant connection is largely indebted to the comedic talents of voice actors Bobby Moynihan (Orka) and Jim Rash (Flix). Auman claims that the actors “have the same chemistry” as their animated counterparts.
Moynihan also commented on the news during a later part of the press event.
“I have had a sentence prepared for a year and a half,” said Moynihan. “If someone would finally ask me, I would say, ‘All I can say is that when Flix says I love you, Orka says I know.’ … They’re the cutest.”
Over the years, fans have had similar theories about pairings like Finn and Poe Dameron as well as Rogue One’s Chirrut Îmwe and Baze Malbus. However, there’s no concrete evidence that those relationships were anything more than platonic.
