On October 6, Batwoman will officially launch on The CW. The series was teased during last year’s Elseworlds crossover, when Batwoman made her Arrowverse debut. But just days before the series premiere, everyone is talking about Ruby Rose’s back.
The Batwoman star has revealed that she underwent emergency back surgery a few months ago to prevent paralysis. Rose also uploaded the operation video to her Instagram account. Fair warning, it’s not easy to look at. And it’s definitely not for the squeamish.

To everyone asking about my new Pez dispenser scar on my neck… A couple of months ago I was told I needed an emergency surgery or I was risking becoming paralyzed… I had herniated two discs doing stunts, and they were close to severing my spinal chord. I was in chronic pain and yet couldn’t feel my arms… Thank you Dr Bray for everything you did and for allowing me to keep working and doing what I love. I am forever in your debt. And to anyone asking why I let them video it.. Did you not watch that Greys anatomy episode where they left a towel in a patient?? Also I wanted to see what happens when we go under.

Rose’s post doesn’t address whether the operation will limit her ability to perform stunts in the future. Batwoman is a very physical role, and there’s always a certain amount of risk when the lead performs a stunt. Perhaps Rose may have to rely on her stunt double to prevent a recurrence of her injury.
