The Punisher is coming back for its sophomore season on Netflix next month. In advance of Jon Bernthal’s return as Frank Castle, Netflix has posted two 60-second recap videos to the show’s official Instagram account. The clips give viewers a quick primer on how Frank’s story has unfolded so far.
The first video summarizes Castle’s introduction in Daredevil season 2. It highlights footage of Castle’s one-man war on Hell’s Kitchen’s gangs that attracted the attention of Matt Murdock’s crime-fighting alter-ego. It also shows Castle getting his revenge on the army colonel who orchestrated the hit on his family. The second clip recaps Castle’s time working alongside David Lieberman/Micro as they explored the military conspiracy that ultimately created the Punisher. It ends with a reminder of Castle’s brutal showdown with Billy Russo, who was left horribly scarred and brand-damaged. Ben Barnes will reprise his role as Billy Russo in The Punisher season 2, but he won’t be called “Jigsaw.”

At the end of The Punisher’s first season, Castle came to terms with leaving his war behind. However, in a recent interview with Collider, Bernthal discussed how this (short-lived) respite will affect Castle’s head space. “Peace sometimes can be the most scary place for a lot of folks,” explained Bernthal. “When you change people’s circumstances, there’s nothing that will take place of this world that you’ve come to know. That’s a lot of what this season is about for Frank, is he keeps getting drawn into this fight and he’s still grappling with the idea of, ‘who is the real Frank Castle?’ And is there any peace?”
The Punisher season 2 is still without a specific release date, but it will definitely be hitting Netflix sometime in January. You can check out both recap videos below, then share your thoughts in the comment section!
