Kenneth Branagh, who directed the very first Thor movie for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has an opinion on why Thor was crying over Deadpool in the 2024 movie Deadpool & Wolverine. Branagh and Ryan Reynolds share the screen in the upcoming action comedy Mayday, leading to speculation on the former’s response to the popular running gag.
Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool-Thor joke had a surprising Kenneth Branagh connection
In Deadpool & Wolverine, Reynolds’ Deadpool notices Thor crying over him on a monitor while speaking to Matthew Macfadyen’s Mr. Paradox at TVA. Although Mr. Paradox quickly changes the channel, Deadpool continues to ask questions about it throughout the movie.
The scene has since spawned considerable speculation. Reynolds even recently told Entertainment Tonight that fans would eventually find out why Thor was crying. He added, “And I’m excited for people to find out.”
During a new interview with Variety, Branagh discussed the Thor gag in Deadpool & Wolverine, noting that Reynolds did not bring it up while they worked together on Mayday. “He worries about offending me, that’s what it is,” Branagh jokingly added. “That was my baby, you know! Way back before you came in.”
This comes after Reynolds made a surprise appearance at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 in full Deadpool costume, wearing a Denim iteration of it, during the Marvel Studios presentation, teasing a potential appearance in Avengers: Doomsday.
Notably, Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor in the MCU, didn’t film additional footage for Deadpool & Wolverine. Marvel created the above-mentioned scene by altering a clip from Thor: The Dark World. In that movie, Thor originally has Tom Hiddleston’s Loki in his arms, not Deadpool. Perhaps if Deadpool is indeed part of Doomsday, the fans will finally get an official explanation for the gag.
Notably, Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley wrote and directed Mayday. The movie premieres on Apple TV on September 4, 2026.
