‘Not The Optimal Fit’: Deadpool Creator Blasts Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern Casting

Ryan ReynoldsGreen Lantern casting has received another blow. Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld has recently weighed in on the ill-fated decision.

Renowned comic book writer Rob Liefeld, who co-created Marvel’s Deadpool with writer Fabian Nicieza, has shared his thoughts on why Reynolds was not the right choice for Green Lantern. He made the statement in response to a fan on X.

“Ryan never liked the way this film was directed; it’s why he never came back,” @darkslade51 said. The comment itself was a reply to a previous post by Liefeld where he called Mark Strong the perfect cast for Sinestro.

The fan added, “He has stated he would if it was made the way Hal is portrayed in the comics, or rather was portrayed in the comics.”

In response, Liefeld said, “It is my humble opinion that Ryan was not the optimal fit for this role.” He continued, “I find his comedic instincts lend to characters such as Deadpool for the best audience interactions and response.”

The Deadpool creator added, “The director of GL gave us two of the very best Bond movies ever, each quite different in their approach. He is gifted. Sometimes the ingredients don’t make the best casserole. That was certainly the case in GL. I wouldn’t mind seeing RR return to the character someday, regardless.”

What happened between Rob Liefeld and Marvel?

In 2025, Rob Liefeld announced that he had cut ties with Marvel after he and his family weren’t invited to the July 2024 premiere of Deadpool & Wolverine. “It was meant to embarrass, diminish, defeat [me],” the comic book writer said in an episode of his Robservations podcast.

“Disney is the deciding factor here,” Liefeld added. “To have them say, ‘You and your family are not welcome here. We tolerated you for the screening.’ At that point, I knew in my heart I couldn’t go forward.”

Liefeld also declared that his final collaboration with Marvel was the Deadpool Team Up series.
