Fast Forever Finally Sets Filming Date as Vin Diesel Explains 5-Year Wait

Vin Diesel has confirmed a production timeline for Fast Forever of the long-running action saga. The actor revealed that principal photography for the franchise’s latest is slated to begin this winter, though the exact start hinges on final studio approvals.

Speaking at the 25th-anniversary screening of The Fast and the Furious, Diesel addressed the lengthy development period. He attributed the five-year wait to a rigorous search for the right narrative conclusion. “We start shooting in December, if I can make good on the request from the studio,” Diesel told Variety. “I’m in a good place, though. I had to go through four sets of writers, four years of development, to get to something that I felt would be worthy of a finale. And when I read the script a couple of weeks ago, [I cried],” he added.

The production start date aligns with Universal’s strategic scheduling for the blockbuster franchise. While the green light is essentially lit, Vin Diesel’s comments suggest that final logistical and creative sign-offs are still in motion for Fast Forever. The actor, who has played Dominic Toretto since 2001, emphasized that the emotional weight of the finale hit him during a recent script read. He described the moment as a release of years of pressure to deliver a satisfying ending for fans.

Inside the screening, before the original film began, Diesel elaborated on his reaction to the Fast Forever screenplay. “By the end of the script that we crafted and worked so hard to make right for you after four years, I was crying,” Diesel stated. “I couldn’t hold it back, and I had to tell everyone. And my sister said, ‘No more crying, bro.’ So I just want to say that sometimes, even the toughest guys in the world need to cry,” he added.

The franchise is Universal’s most profitable asset, having grossed over $7.3 billion worldwide. The high financial stakes explain the studio’s caution and the multiple writer rotations over the last few years. Diesel’s emotional investment hints at a script that leans heavily into the themes of family and legacy that have defined the series.
