Warner Bros. has released behind-the-scenes footage of Jason Momoa‘s process of playing Lobo in the DCU film Supergirl. The six-plus-minute footage demonstrates why the Dune actor was an exceptional choice to play the cigar-smoking anti-hero.
New Supergirl video shows the making of Jason Momoa’s Lobo
Warner Bros. Entertainment recently shared a video on social media that reveals how Jason Momoa became Lobo. It begins with James Gunn recounting that one of the first texts he received after landing the job as DCU co-head came from Momoa, who wrote Lobo in big letters. Peter Safran, the other head of the DCU, added, “Everybody knows he’s perfect as Lobo.”
Further, the video shows the costume and wardrobe department working on a visibly exuberant Momoa, who says at one point, “This is awesome.” He even compares Lobo to Aquaman, the character he played in the DCEU, suggesting that the intergalactic bounty hunter can pull off feats that Arthur Curry never could.
The clip also features interviews with screenwriter Ana Nogueira and director Craig Gillespie. The former recalls her concerns about adapting such an iconic character and how Momoa helped her navigate through them. Meanwhile, Gillespie hailed Momoa as a “force,” adding, “We got to really craft this character together and really pay homage to the comic-book version of Lobo.”
Gillespie also noted that while Lobo has existed in the comics for decades, they chose to focus on the version prevalent in the ’90s. “And he wanted to keep the humor, the eccentricities of Lobo that we have in the comics,” the filmmaker said about Momoa.
Additionally, various members of the Supergirl team seem to agree that Momoa’s Lobo turn is “perfect casting.” Gunn noted in the video that, just like in the comics, Lobo is “not the most heroic guy” in the movie. Momoa elaborated, “I love anti-heroes. I love someone who deep down lives by a code.” Gillespie also mentioned that there were moments of improvisation in the movie and that Momoa “embodied” the character.
