Ewan McGregor recently addressed the delay in returning as Obi-Wan Kenobi during an E! News interview. The actor expressed clear frustration with the pace of development at Lucasfilm. He confirmed his eagerness to reprise the role but noted the studio has not moved forward.
“Come on, I’m ready. I’m ready whenever they are,” McGregor said. “They just seem to not be ready. I don’t know why, but I’m up for it.” The actor pointed to the roughly ten-year gap between the series finale and the original Star Wars film. He believes that period offers rich storytelling potential worth exploring.
McGregor described the ending of the 2022 Disney+ miniseries as a natural launching point. He recalled Obi-Wan walking into the desert after deciding to give Luke Skywalker a normal childhood. The character leaves Luke with Owen and Beru Lars before reuniting with Qui-Gon Jinn’s Force spirit.
The actor then highlighted the narrative gap that remains unexplored on screen. The next chronological appearance of Obi-Wan is Alec Guinness’s portrayal in 1977’s Star Wars. McGregor wants to tell the stories that fill the space between those two moments.
He also suggested this could become a long-term commitment across multiple projects. “What happens between those two moments is what I want to do,” McGregor explained. He added that he wants to spend the rest of his career telling these stories through series or films.
McGregor also noted a practical timeline that supports continued involvement with the character. “I’ve got ten years before I’m Alec Guinness’s age,” he said. He closed with a direct appeal to the studio, saying, “So come on, Disney.” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy previously stated in April 2023 that a second season was not in active development.
