Fans of the Mortal Kombat movies will have to wait for some time for an update regarding Part 3, especially after the concerning comments from director Simon McQuoid about the franchise’s future. In a recent interview, the Australian filmmaker expressed uncertainty about the Mortal Kombat threequel after the second entry failed to make its mark on the box office.

While speaking with The Wrap, McQuoid revealed that despite past updates, the prospect of a third Mortal Kombat movie continues to remain up in the air for the time being. “I think it’s still going through its life cycle,” the director noted. “So I don’t know yet. I’m not sure.”
McQuoid’s worrisome update comes after the recently released Mortal Kombat 2 concluded its worldwide box office run on an underwhelming note. Despite having an enhanced budget, star cast, as well as marketing campaign, the sequel could only bring in $129.4 million globally, as per Box Office Mojo. In sharp contrast, 2021’s Mortal Kombat was able to rake in $84.4 million worldwide on a much smaller budget.
Mortal Kombat 2’s financial failure comes despite an upturn in reviews, with the sequel earning a respectable 64% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes, as compared to its predecessor’s 55% score. The movie also earned a slightly better response from the audience than the original, as evidenced by its 86% Popcornmeter score.
During the interview, McQuoid also discussed the possibility of returning for a potential Mortal Kombat 3. “I feel like there are other stories that I want to tell that aren’t necessarily in ‘Mortal Kombat,’ and I have multiple things in development, one of which we’re just casting now, and that’s not ‘Mortal Kombat’ at all – something that is in the real world and very much a deep dive into a singular character and character study. I’m excited about it. But I never want to close doors,” he noted.
