Spider-Man 5 may mark a new but unexpectedly sad trend for avid Marvel fans. Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s massive success has suggested that Tom Holland may return for another installment to reprise his beloved role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man.
However, it appears that Spider-Man 5 won’t arrive sooner at all. Previously, all the past Spider-Man movies featuring Holland had a maximum gap of two years between them.
That trend changed with Brand New Day as it took nearly five years to come out. Now, the fifth entry is also expected to continue the new trend because Brand New Day’s director Destin Daniel Cretton will be busy with another project before he takes control of Spider-Man 5. The filmmaker will be focusing on the live-action Naruto movie. It’s expected to begin filming in the first half of 2027, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
Spider-Man 5 won’t come until after Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars
The latest update basically means fans might have to wait longer for Spider-Man 5. The next big MCU movie is Avengers: Doomsday, set to release in theaters on December 18, 2026. It will be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027. Notably, there will be no movies coming out between these two big entries.
The future slate for 2028 also looks packed, with Ghost Rider, X-Men, and Black Panther 3 according to multiple reports. However, it doesn’t feature Spider-Man 5 at all. Marvel and Sony are yet to confirm the movie in any capacity.
Interestingly, though, Sony’s CEO Tom Rothman recently teased Spider-Man 5. While he didn’t give any specific details or confirmation, he wished for Tom Holland’s comeback. “The honest truth is we don’t know at this point. This has been the focus of our studio for almost two years. I can tell you this: I certainly, certainly hope. I heard Tom say at some point that he wanted to continue, and we would love it if he did.”
As for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the movie is currently breaking box office records. After opening to a record first domestic weekend of $360 million, the superhero movie made $145 million in the second week.
Besides Holland, the MCU movie also features Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo, among others.
