Destin Daniel Cretton’s upcoming Naruto project will likely get a release date sooner than expected. The Spider-Man: Brand New Day director is looking to begin production on the highly anticipated adaptation next year.
According to a recent report by The Hollywood Reporter, Cretton’s upcoming adaptation of the iconic shonen manga and anime Naruto is aiming to go into production in the first half of 2027. So, we can speculate that the movie might arrive on the big screen sometime in 2028.
Destin Daniel Cretton’s Naruto production timeline
In November 2024, Lionsgate brought Destin Daniel Cretton on board to direct its upcoming adaptation of Masashi Kishimoto’s popular manga series Naruto. The announcement had come just seven months before it was announced that he would direct Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Last week, reports suggested that Lionsgate is eyeing early 2027 to begin production of Naruto, giving the strongest indication yet of its potential release timeline. However, the studio has yet to confirm a release window for the project.
Meanwhile, specifics about Cretton’s Naruto have been kept under wraps. No official announcement regarding the cast has been made either.
Kishimoto’s Naruto remains one of the most iconic and culturally significant manga series in history. This coming-of-age story follows a young ninja named Naruto Uzumaki, who dreams of becoming the Hokage, the leader of his village. The manga has also spawned several popular anime shows and spin-offs.
Kishimoto had previously addressed Cretton’s involvement in the new Naruto adaptation. The mangaka explained why he felt that Cretton was the right choice for the project. “When I heard of Destin’s attachment, it happened to be right after watching a blockbuster action film of his, and I thought he would be the perfect director for Naruto,” the mangaka said (via The Hollywood Reporter).
Kishimoto added, “After enjoying his other films and understanding that his forte is in creating solid dramas about people, I became convinced that there is no other director for Naruto.”
Destin Daniel Cretton has been the biggest talk of the town amid Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s soaring success. The movie continues to smash box-office records, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2026 with over $1 billion in worldwide earnings.
