Chris Evans confirms his Luke Cage code name on Avengers: Doomsday set

Chris Evans has revealed that Marvel used the name “Luke Cage” as a cover for Steve Rogers during the production of Avengers: Doomsday. The actor shared the detail while speaking to fans at Fan Expo Boston, offering a rare glimpse into the measures taken to protect the secrecy surrounding his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The codename was reportedly used throughout the production process. “Within the script, my character was called Luke Cage just in case things leaked,” Evans said. He added that the crew also used the name when discussing his movements on set. “On the call sheets, I was called Luke Cage. Even on set, they’d say, ‘Luke Cage is travelling.’ It was such a locked-down thing,” the actor noted.

Evans’ return as Steve Rogers had been rumored for months before Marvel officially confirmed it. The actor repeatedly denied reports that he would reprise the role, but his involvement was eventually revealed in the first Avengers: Doomsday teaser.

At CinemaCon 2026, Evans also addressed why he agreed to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “I said I would only come back if there was a real reason, and in Doomsday, there’s a very real reason why these heroes need Steve Rogers,” he said. The video shown at the event featured Steve reuniting with Thor.

The upcoming film features a large ensemble cast that includes Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, and more. Joe and Anthony Russo are directing Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, which will conclude the Multiverse Saga.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2027.
