The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s chance of becoming profitable at the box office becomes even slimmer after its latest weekend collection. Directed by Jon Favreau, the movie was released in theaters on May 22. It features a stellar cast including Pedro Pascal, Sigourney Weaver, Jeremy Allen White, and more.
The Mandalorian and Grogu box office drops by another 59%
The weekend box office collection for The Mandalorian and Grogu has seen a further drop in the latest figures.
According to a report by Box Office Mojo, the Star Wars film saw a 59 percent drop in its box office take, earning just $10 million over the weekend. Over the previous weekend, the movie grossed $24 million, a 70 percent drop after Memorial Day weekend.
In its opening weekend, The Mandalorian and Grogu garnered an opening collection of $81 million in the domestic market. On the other hand, it grossed around $63 million internationally, bringing its global total to $165 million. However, the film recorded the lowest domestic opening for a Star Wars film, falling behind the second-lowest opening of Solo: A Star Wars Story, which came out in 2018.
The latest Star Wars movie was reportedly made on a $165 million budget, with an approximate $100 million spent on marketing. Accordingly, the movie might need between $500 million and $600 million to break even at the box office. However, the worldwide collection currently stands at $293 million, making it seem unlikely for the movie to reach that mark. In contrast, Solo: A Star Wars Story collected over $392 million at the global box office on a budget of $275 million (via The Hollywood Reporter).
Amid concerns that it may finish its run as the lowest-earning Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu is receiving fierce competition from movies like recently released Masters of the Universe, Backrooms, Obsession, and Scary Movie.
