A new report may have clarified the true meaning behind Mark Ruffalo’s latest loose-lipped moment about Spider-Man‘s future in the MCU. The actor’s recent comments about a certain wall-crawler fighting an alien sent fans into a frenzy, but industry insiders now suggest the remarks may not point where most initially assumed.
Rumors claim Mark Ruffalo’s alien comment was about Andrew Garfield
Mark Ruffalo recently attended a Q&A at Italy’s Ministry of Education and Merit. During the event, he stated, “I promise you 1000% that [Spider-Man] will be fighting an alien in the future.” The comment immediately sparked widespread speculation among Marvel Cinematic Universe fans online.
Many fans initially assumed Ruffalo was teasing Venom’s arrival in the MCU. Marvel Studios and Sony laid groundwork for that storyline in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. The film’s mid-credits scene showed a piece of Tom Hardy’s alien symbiote left behind. The 1984 Secret Wars comic also featured Spider-Man’s black symbiote costume for the first time. Marvel Studios plans to draw from both the 1984 and 2015 Secret Wars storylines.
However, prominent industry scoopers now suggest Ruffalo may have meant Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man. Well-known scooper Daniel Richtman posted on X, “I think he’s talking about Andrew’s Spider-Man here.” Graphic designer and VFX artist James Mack also weighed in on the conversation. Mack responded to The Hollywood Handle’s post about the comments with, “Andrew Garfield as well, in Avengers Secret Wars.” Mack also reposted Richtman’s post, further fueling the Andrew Garfield speculation online.
Notably, the theory connects to a moment from No Way Home where Garfield’s Peter Parker expressed interest in fighting aliens. Meanwhile, Ruffalo is part of the cast for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, scheduled for July 31, 2026. Marvel Studios typically goes to extreme lengths protecting spoiler details from upcoming projects.
Fans continue debating whether Ruffalo referenced Tom Holland’s or Andrew Garfield’s version of Spider-Man. Of course, the actor could also simply be referring to any number of alien characters in the MCU. Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives as part of Phase 6, while Avengers: Secret Wars remains in active development.
