Mark Ruffalo‘s loose lips have seemingly struck again, as Marvel fans believe the actor has spoiled a future Marvel Cinematic Universe storyline involving Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.
What did Mark Ruffalo say that has Spider-Man fans believing Venom is coming to the MCU?
Ruffalo recently took part in a Q&A at Italy’s Ministry of Education and Merit (Ministero dell’istruzione e del merito), where he let slip, “I promise you 1000% that [Spider-Man] will be fighting an alien in the future.”
While Ruffalo never actually said the word “Venom” in his answer, fans quickly latched onto the idea that the alien in question would be the black goo-like symbiote with a long and storied history in the Spider-Man mythos.
Marvel Studios and Sony already laid the groundwork for introducing Venom into the MCU in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. The movie’s mid-credits scene showed Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock and Venom drinking at a bar before being transported back to their universe. However, a bit of the alien symbiote was left behind, hinting at its inclusion in a future Spider-Man movie.
The Secret Wars comic book storyline from 1984 featured the first appearance of Spider-Man’s black costume, which was later revealed to be an alien symbiote. With Marvel Studios set to pull from both the 1984 and 2015 Secret Wars for Avengers: Secret Wars, fans have long speculated that Holland’s Spider-Man will receive the black costume in the upcoming movie.
Of course, Ruffalo could easily not be alluding to Venom at all, as there are countless aliens that Spider-Man could cross paths with in the MCU. However, since Ruffalo is part of the cast for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and given that Marvel Studios goes to extreme lengths to protect spoilery details from future projects, if the actor had insider knowledge of Spider-Man fighting an alien, it would likely be from Brand New Day. But again, until officially confirmed, fans should take Ruffalo’s comments with a grain of salt.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is slated to hit theaters on July 31, 2026, as part of Phase 6 of the MCU.
