On January 30, 2026, they clarified, “Ok correction she’s not a Doom just looks like one. She’s his sidekick Witch.” This update directly contradicts earlier rumors suggesting Atwell’s Peggy Carter would portray a female version of Doctor Doom.
@MyTimeToShineHello sparked initial speculation with posts on January 19 and 21, stating, “Good Steve vs Evil Peggy” and “MCU Steve vs Doom Peggy,” suggesting a multiversal conflict between Steve Rogers and a villainous Peggy Carter. The new clarification identifies the character as “Witch,” a sidekick to Doom, rather than a Doom variant herself.
Rumors had previously claimed that Hayley Atwell would play multiple versions of Peggy Carter in the film. These included possibilities of her appearing as Captain Carter from What If…? and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, as well as the Endgame variant who lived out her life with Steve Rogers. Marvel Studios has not confirmed any of these reports.
In an interview with Collider, Atwell reacted to the casting rumors with skepticism, asking, “Really? Who…on Reddit? Who’s doing that? Who’s saying that?” In a separate interview with Den of Geek, she expressed interest in returning to the role, saying, “I would love that. There are so many things that she could do,” and called Captain Carter “an underserved character.”
Speculation continues about the appearance of super soldier variants like Sam Wilson, Bucky Barnes, John Walker, and Alexei Shostakov. However, Marvel has not officially commented on the cast or plot details of Avengers: Doomsday.
