If audiences around the world make Avengers: Doomsday a box office success, a long-rumored Avengers: Secret Wars change may just become true.
It’s no secret that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has struggled at the box office since the COVID-19 pandemic. Marvel Studios has had great difficulty in launching new heroes and teams to the mainstream public, with Eternals, Thunderbolts*, Shang-Chi, and The Marvels all underperforming commercially, and in some cases also critically.
Marvel’s rare box office hits have all come from characters established during the Infinity Saga. New movies centered around Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Thor, Black Panther, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and Deadpool & Wolverine all earned between $750 million and $1.9 billion at the worldwide box office.
However, the tide may be shifting back in favor of Marvel Studios, as its Fantastic Four reboot grossed over $521 million worldwide, the highest gross yet for a Multiverse Saga movie centered around new additions to the MCU.
Avengers: Doomsday’s success may lead to more Secret Wars
Avengers: Doomsday will reunite the heroes of the Multiverse Saga, from Shang-Chi and the Thunderbolts (a.k.a. the New Avengers) to the Fantastic Four, Thor, and Black Panther. Even former MCU stars Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. will be back for Doomsday, with the former returning as Steve Rogers while the latter steps into the villainous role of Doctor Doom.
The Avengers movies have always been money-makers for Marvel Studios, with the last two — Infinity War (2018) and Endgame (2019) — grossing over $2 billion apiece. Now, according to trusted scooper Daniel Richtman, via his Patreon, if Doomday can follow in its predecessors’ success, Marvel Studios will split Avengers: Secret Wars into two parts. However, this decision will only happen if Doomsday is successful.
This isn’t the first time that reports of a third Avengers movie have emerged online. There have been whispers about Marvel having wanted to make the grand conclusion of the Multiverse Saga a trilogy of films for years now. Insider MyTimeToShineHello confirmed them in November 2025 before revealing that the studio decided against an Avengers trilogy. However, now it seems like it all depends on whether audiences turn out in droves to see the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men fight Doctor Doom.
Directed by the Russo Brothers, Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, with Secret Wars set to follow on December 17, 2027.
